What is the curriculum for Junior Soldiers?

The junior soldier program has three levels of curriculum: the preparation course, the weekly lessons and the honor junior soldier program.

All junior soldier material is available in Spanish.

Preparation Course

Totally His is the junior soldier preparation course which must be completed before a child can become a junior soldier.

For some children, this will not only be an introduction to the beliefs, practices and mission of The Salvation Army, but also the first time they have really come to terms with what it means to give their lives to Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.

This six-session course covers the following topics:

  1. Forgiveness
  2. Obedience
  3. A Clean Heart
  4. Devotion
  5. Focus
  6. Commitment

Lesson plans, activity sheets, follow-up post cards, a prayer list sheet, a junior soldier enrollment checklist and other helpful information are included in the manual.

Junior Soldier Weekly Curriculum

After a young person has completed the preparation course and made the decision to uphold the Junior Soldier Promise, he or she will be enrolled as a junior soldier. The next step is weekly discipleship through the Training Junior Soldiers courses.

The aim of Training Junior Soldiers is to increase the young person?s knowledge and understanding of biblical truths, Christian doctrine, and Salvation Army practice and history so the young people develop behaviors essential to Christian growth.

Though the entire course is covered over five years, it is broken down into volumes and units. Each unit addresses the following areas:

  • Bible
  • The Salvation Army
  • Christian Growth
  • To Be Like Jesus

Each volume comes with numerous, excellent ideas and materials that the leader can adapt to best meet the needs of the group.

Honor Junior Soldiers

As junior soldiers mature physically and emotionally, they should also be given the opportunity to begin the life-long process of spiritual growth. The Honor Junior Soldier course is an important step in this process. It provides a more in-depth exploration of fundamental Christian beliefs, the doctrines of The Salvation Army and their scriptural basis and the importance of living out the Junior Soldier Promise.

To begin the Honor Junior Soldier course, the student must be:

  • At least 10 years old
  • A junior soldier who has completed a minimum of one year of junior soldier curriculum.

Some of the honor junior solider requirements are:

  • Attending and participating in corps activities and meetings
  • Wearing the junior soldier uniform
  • Tithing
  • Memorizing the doctrines
  • Completing projects

While leaders can adapt the materials, this course may require as many as 22 weeks.

Contact your corps officer for more information on junior soldier curriculum.
