Corps Cadets

The preteen and teenage years are complex, full of changes and questions. Young people are trying to discover who they are, where they fit and how to make an impact on the world around them. Moral values are internalized and made their own. They're discovering what's important, who they can trust, what's worth fighting for and why they should step out of their comfort zones to take a stand.

To help adolescents on their journey, The Salvation Army has developed a discipleship course specifically for preteens and teens called CROSSTraining for Corps Cadets. This is one of the most vital programs in a Salvation Army corps (center for worship and service).

The main objectives of the program are:

To provide an atmosphere in which spiritual growth can occur through:

  • Bible study
  • Study of Salvation Army beliefs (doctrines)
  • Prayer
  • Fellowship
  • Tithing
  • Service
  • Witnessing
  • Adult mentors

To provide opportunities for development of leadership skills through:

  • Participation in worship meetings
  • Attending training conferences and seminars
  • Being active in various service oriented programs
  • Taking on leadership roles in Sunday school and other corps programs

To deepen their knowledge and appreciation of Salvation Army history, policies and procedures through:

  • Salvation Army literature and videos
  • Tours of Salvation Army facilities such as Adult Rehabilitation Centers and Harbor Light Centers that help addicts and the homeless fight their addictions and reenter society
  • Taking part in other Salvation Army social service ministries in the local community

To provide training and opportunities to develop soul-winning experiences through:

  • Planned visitation
  • Outdoor evangelism
  • Witnessing
  • Discipling other young people

To provide an opportunity for Christian fellowship and relationship building in a safe and caring small group through activities such as:

  • Social gatherings
  • Weekend retreats
  • Accountability groups
  • Prayer partners

The overall goal is to prepare young people for a lifelong commitment to spiritual growth through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and to find ways to serve God through The Salvation Army.
Most corps cadet brigades meet weekly September through June.
