Holiday Assistance for Families & Children

Through the Christmas Assistance Program, eligible Genesee County families receive holiday meal packages, toys, clothing and more.  In 2011, Christmas Assistance was provided to 1,204 Genesee County families, comprised of 3,911 individuals.  Items distributed include:

  • 1,300 holiday meal packages, enough to feed a family for five days.
  • 1,891 toys and 1,880 stocking stuffers for children 14 years and younger
  • 1,834  items of clothing
  • 1,510 pairs of hats and gloves
  • 1,696 undergarments, and
  • 636 miscellaneous household items

In partnership with WIOG  102.5, Absolutely the Best! Dry Cleaners and ABC12, Coats for Kids provided a record number of new or gently used coats between November 2011 and January 2012. 

More than 1,741 coat vouchers have been redeemed as of late January 2012, a value of nearly $30,000.  

Volunteers Activity

VolunteersThe Salvation Army continues to count its blessings for the many volunteers that support its mission during the Christmas Season and throughout the whole year. 

The following volunteer statistics include volunteer hours  at the kettles (Christmas in July as well as Christmas) and during the Christmas distribution process, time given to assist with office tasks, time spent on the canteen by Emergency Disaster Service  volunteers and time given by members of the Advisory Board.

In Fiscal Year 2010-2011, 423 individuals or groups volunteered 6,074 hours - a savings of almost $130,000.

During the 2011 Christmas Season (late October 2011 through December 2011),  339 individuals or groups volunteered  6,025 hours - a savings of $128,694.00. 

More than 175 seasonal workers were employed to help staff the Red Kettles during the seven week campaign in 2011.

Volunteer hours are calculated at $21.36 per Independent Sector.
