The Salvation Army St. Louis

Count it all Joy

32 year-old Gary Lamonte found himself at The Salvation Army’s Harbor Light Center (HLC) after a near 20-year battle with drugs and alcohol. Unable to live with himself, or without drugs, Gary entered treatment hoping it would help mend relationships and get him back into his home with his family, only to discover the most precious relationship of all: his relationship with God.

President Obama Announces
"United We Serve"

United We Serve kicks off on June 22 and runs through September 11, which will be marked for the first time as a national day of service and remembrance. The initiative focuses on four key areas: education, health, energy and the environment; and community renewal. It is being led by the Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal agency that improves lives and strengthens communities though volunteering and service.

“This summer, I'm calling on all of you to make volunteerism and community service part of your daily life and the life of this nation,” said President Obama in the video. “Economic recovery is as much about what you're doing in your communities as what we're doing in Washington – and it’s going to take all of us, working together.”

To make it easy for individuals to get involved, the Corporation created Serve.Gov (www.serve.gov), a website that allows visitors to type in their zip code to find local volunteer opportunities, recruit volunteers by posting their organization’s projects, or get ideas for creating their own projects with friends, families, and neighbors.

Oh Christmas tree…oh Christmas tree!

The Salvation Army needs donated trees for Tree of Lights

St. Louis − The Salvation Army needs your help with a St. Louis tradition. The Army is in need of donated pine or blue spruce trees to place throughout the St. Louis region during the 2009 Tree of Lights campaign.

The ideal tree will be 30 to 40 feet tall and easily accessible in a front yard, with no electric lines overhead. The Army will remove the tree free of charge in November and donors will receive a letter recognizing their donation for tax purposes.

The trees are focal points of the Tree of Lights campaign. The 12-week fundraising and awareness effort helps fund a major portion of programs and services offered throughout the region year-round. All donations stay local and 83 cents of every donated dollar goes directly into programming.

For more information, or to offer a tree, please call Angie Merseal at 314.646.3193. Photos of possible trees should be e-mailed to Angie.Merseal@usc.salvationarmy.org.

JC’s 25th Anniversary
and
Salvation Army Night

The Salvation Army and KHITS 96 teamed up to celebrate JC Corcoran’s 25th anniversary in St. Louis at a Cardinals baseball game on May 15.

The promotion raised more than $14,000 for The Salvation Army and helped get the message out about the increase in need that is still ongoing in our communities. The Army is seeing an unprecedented increase in its services for mortgage help, assistance with utilities or rent, food for the dinner table and much more.

KHITS listeners and many others bought tickets to the game and a large portion of each ticket was donated to The Salvation Army. Each person who also purchased a ticket received a special edition JC t-shirt.

JC has been in the St. Louis market for 25 years and has been a great friend of The Salvation Army since his arrival. Throughout the years he has raised more than $250,000 and 50 tons of food.

Thank you to all that attended and we are looking forward to doing this again next year.

The Salvation Army
responds to those in need after severe storms

St. Louis − The Salvation Army has responded to several areas recently impacted by severe weather.

In the initial response to the storms on May 8, The Salvation Army conducted several feedings throughout the region at shelters and other locations.

Several requests for financial assistance have been made to replace food and purchase fuel for generators. The Salvation Army is providing financial assistance and vouchers in Williamson County in Illinois and the southern Missouri counties of Jasper, Polk, Dent, Madison and Bollinger. To receive a voucher, an individual must be referred by the American Red Cross. The Red Cross is the first point of contact for tracking for persons affected by storms.

There were also major storms throughout the region on May 13, including at least one tornado that caused significant damage in northern Missouri, specifically in the town of Kirksville. The Salvation Army has been working closely with the emergency managers and other responding organizations to help those in need.

To help residents of those communities, donations of cleaning supplies, personal care/toiletries and food items can be made to The Salvation Army’s food pantries and feeding program. Monetary donations can be made through its Web site for this recovery effort by clicking on the "Donate Now" button or donors may call 1-800-SAL-ARMY or mail donations to: The Salvation Army Midland Division; P.O. Box 21787; St. Louis, MO 63109. Donors should specify their contribution is for “May 09 Storms.”
