The Haiti earthquakes, Chile earthquakes, tornados in Oklahoma, volcano eruptions in Iceland, flooding in Tennessee and of course the global economy slump. These are the obstacles that God has given us to overcome. Obstacles that will undoubtedly make us stronger and love our fellow man a little more once we have come together to remedy them. The Salvation Army has been working since 1880 to show communities the power of God’s will through our Emergency Disaster Services team. Christmas 2009- Thank You for Your Help!
We here at The Salvation Army Sturgis Corps want to offer a warm and heartfelt thank you to everyone who donated their time, talents and monies to help support our 2009 Christmas programs. We have over 400 volunteers in the Sturgis Corps Volunteer First data base and it is through our volunteers' commitment to The Salvation Army that we successfully completed another blessed Christmas season. We wanted to share with you an update on the current status of our fund-raising campaign and holiday assistance given to those in need. The overall Christmas fund-raising goal is $180,000 and thanks to the community, we have reached our goal through gifts-in-kind, cash, general donations and kettles. With your help, $46,439 was collected in the Red Kettles.
Our 2009 Christmas Distribution was a success as well. We would like to thank Jim Ware and Ware Construction for providing us with a building to hold our Christmas Distribution and fresh potatoes, Michiana Corrugated for helping with the food boxes. We would also like to thank the Sturgis Toy Run, Toys for Tots, Michigan State Police and the many individuals who provided toys for families in need. We extend thanks for assistance from Tom Morris (Toy Run President), Toy Run Staff members and many other volunteers who helped with the set-up and distribution of the food and toys. It wouldn't have been possible without all the help.
Just to share some seasonal stats:
- Our Christmas Toy Distribution assisted 511 families which included 1,272 children. 94 individuals gave 314 hours to help these families through set-up, packing food boxes and distribution.
- Our Kettle Volunteer Hours exceeded 1036 hours with over 108 individuals, churches, groups and service clubs ringing the bells. 9 volunteers gave 60 hours throughout the season to help count the kettles.
- Nursing home visits- 40 volunteers gave of their time to help us pack and distribute gifts to those in nursing homes.
These numbers are on top of the regular volunteers who give time year-round. We had volunteers working in our Lunch program, food pantry, thrift stores and other areas. Once again, our community is blessed with wonderful volunteers! Thank you for stepping up to help those in need. Without your continued support, we would have never been able to assist the many families and individuals during this past holiday season. Have a Blessed and Happy 2010!
