I served as an intern for three years in two separate locations...both very different, but ideal one in the same. I think that the internship should be two years minimum (unless the intern decides to terminate the internship due to confirmation that officership is not for him/her). One year of the internship should take place in a bigger city area, perhaps close to DHQ, but definately close to other corps. The second year should be done further out in the field. One of the two corps should be well off finanically, while the other one a struggle, and the same should be in regards to the number of salvationist (and people who attend the corps) because while we'd like to strive our corps to be healthy and growing, reality is there are some that are not; it's good to experience this and have an idea of what to expect. Where available, it would, also, be good for the intern to gain experience with a shelter, thrift store, and other unique elements that may enhance the kind/amount of experience gained throughout the internship.

I'm glad to see that there are parameters outlined in the internship...both corps gave me VERY different experiences and expectations were VERY different too, part of that was due to the fact that every corps and community is different, while part of the fact was due to the lack of clarity and the "making it up as we go along" factor.

Overall, I am very excited for this program to be implemented...it is essential to both understanding how The Salvation Army works as a whole, especially behind the scenes, but it also allows for affirmation both from the Lord, and fellow believers, one's call for officership!

I served as a divisional Intern in the midland division for two years prior to entering CFOT. While I was greatly prepared for the ministry that is waiting for me in 458 days, I was not prepared for some parts of CFOT. I think a vital element to the territorial program should be CFOT prep. At the very least teaching the Interns how to do a proper scripture study would put them almost a quarter ahead of their session mates. It might also be a good idea to have the Interns take the Aux. Captain’s skill assessment.

I'd love to see the program expanded beyond 15, with possible focuses beyond what we now have. ie: What about an ARC or other institutional internship (different than ARC Trainee Program for officers)? What about teen interns just for summer? Our teens could have some hands-on training before college. What do you think everyone? How about interns focused on the urban setting? I know this came up at our table in the candidates section of the Strategic Conference.

So a couple would get $52,000? Is housing provided and who pays for that?

We have been to the Training college, but left 100 days before graduation. Are we, would we, be eligible for this plan as well?

We would love more information, if that's available, and possibly even chat with you at some point in person about this opportunity. We still feel called to the ministry and would like to still pursue officership if that is possible.

Thanks for sharing, James & Doretta

I know quite a few people wanting to intern but the problem is corps can't afford interns especially a married couple...especially when they want to be officers they can learn so much through this program so they have more experiences when they are officers.

I know at my college I had to do an internship as part of my program (B.A.Pastoral Ministry). While college internships may be shorter, working with Christian Universities in our territory may be a way to develop relations with other schools and bring people into the Army who may not know of us otherwise. School internships may have to be adjusted to fit with the colleges themselves, but the avenue itself has a large pool to draw from if all the Christian colleges in the area are considered.

Dave
