General Shaw Clifton attended the United Nations in New York, USA, for a meeting with Mr Ban, Ki-moon, the Secretary-General. The General was accompanied by Commissioner Helen Clifton (World President of Women's Ministries), Commissioner Christine MacMillan (Director, International Social Justice Commission), Lieut-Colonel Geanette Seymour (Deputy Director, ISJC) and Major Richard Gaudion (Private Secretary to the General).

During a constructive and cordial meeting the Secretary-General expressed warm appreciation for the global work of The Salvation Army, articulating his belief that faith organisations have a key role to play in alleviating human suffering. He made specific reference to the UN's Millennium Development Goals and acknowledged The Salvation Army's part in working to achieve these around the world.
General Clifton spoke about the Army's work in 118 countries, emphasising its ability to work with governments of all kinds. Reference was made to the work and witness of The Salvation Army in South Korea, the home country of the Secretary-General, and also of the Army's initiatives in reaching out to communities in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (often known as North Korea). The General offered words of affirmation concerning the value of the United Nations organisation and the office of the Secretary-General in promoting peaceful relations between the nations.
The General presented Mr Ban with a gift of Salvation Army books and a report on Salvation Army initiatives in relation to the Millennium Development Goals.
The Secretary-General expressed further appreciation for the role of Salvation Army representatives at the United Nations.
