Ray Kroc, founder of McDonald's, and his wife, Joan, were long-time supporters of The Salvation Army. During the 1950s and 60s Ray volunteered as a bellringer. He'd also travel down Michigan Avenue in downtown Chicago personally delivering hot coffee and Golden Arches hamburgers to those ringing the bell.
As a child, Joan heard stories around the family dinner table of how The Salvation Army helped many people during the Great Depression. Her love for the organization continued to grow as she matured. The Krocs fully supported The Salvation Army's mission and had a long-standing relationship with the organization.
In 2002, the San Diego, Calif., Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center (RJKCCC) was opened to the public, a result of Mrs. Kroc's first large gift to the organization. This was the first RJKCCC and Mrs. Kroc often visited the center.
"I wanted my gift to demonstrate to the world my confidence in The Salvation Army," said Mrs. Kroc while visiting the San Diego center.
