Project 24/29 is a Salvation Army youth event designed to teach young people about world hunger and preventable diseases that take the lives of 29,000 children every 24 hours. In this 24 hour overnighter event, participants learn about a specific country, culture and its needs through educational activities, intentional prayer time, service projects and Bible studies.
Before the event takes place participants are challenged to collect money by asking people to sponsor them in order to raise money for a Salvation Army territory in need overseas. During the entire event participants who are able, will fast in order to experience, even in a small way, what it is like to experience hunger.
During this event there are a number of different activities and educational opportunities, including:
Fasting Isaiah 58:6-7
Praying Proverbs 15:29 & James 1:6
Serving Galatians 5:13
Loving Matthew 22:37-40
Action Isaiah 59:15b-16a
You! And your friends!
Anyone can participate. All you need is a Leader that is willing to put together the details and a bunch of young people excited about changing the world and bringing justice and mercy to the voiceless around the globe.
Micah 6:8 No, O people, the Lord has told you what is good, and this is what he requires of you: to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.
You and your youth group. During Project 24/29 the group will participate in different activities that stretch participants spiritually and mentally as they explore God’s love of justice and mercy for ALL people. As the group learns how they can actively live out God’s mandate to love one another, significant connections can occur between participates while in prayer time, learning activities and while serving. These connections can reinforce and build strong long-lasting relationships within the youth group as well as solidify their relationship with Jesus Christ.
People in need overseas. In many countries overseas basic healthcare is out of reach for many which means diseases are more rampant easy to contract:
According to UNICEF many deadly diseases are preventable through basic methods that are not always accessible;
Vitamin A supplements and breastfeeding for infants up to 6 months of age can help prevent under nutrition in babies and children.
Affordable treatments (antiretroviral drugs) can protect children with HIV from developing AIDS and help prevent the transmission of the virus from mothers to their children.
If births are attended by a trained health worker and pregnant women are given enough care before, during and after childbirth, the health and lives of newborns and mothers can be saved.
Affordable vaccinations, immunizations and antibiotics can prevent or treat childhood diseases, such as pneumonia and measles.
Nets treated with insecticide can protect children from the mosquitoes that cause malaria.
Safe drinking water and basic sanitation facilities can help children avoid diarrhea.
Most likely at your church. If that’s not available on the date that you need to hold the event ask around and see if other churches want to participate and if the event could be held at their church. And next time your church will hold the event. Be creative, think outside the box. Wherever the event is held, you’ll experience a mass amount of learning and Holy Spirit encounters. Just be ready for it!
The money will go to a Salvation Army Territory in need overseas. At the beginning of the school year the Sponsorship office will choose the receiving territory for the year based on most in need. We’ll help supply you with any information about the territory and cultural info from that location as well.
