The cities across The Salvation Army Central Territory require an increased investment of time, resources, energy, and prayer. These urban areas are fertile fields where culture and society are constantly morphing into new shapes and expressions. As always, God is there, and we must join Him in mission.
This is the time to find fresh ways of expanding our work. With skill, compassion and reliance on the Holy Spirit, service opportunities of amazing proportion will emerge.
However, many challenges confront us. Over a number of decades we have too often adopted a retreat mentality. Changing neighborhoods, societal shifts and funding challenges have caused us to abandon many communities, leaving hundreds of thousands without access to corps and social service ministries.
Additionally, in many places we are no longer connected to the communities being served. We dispense religious and social services but have become virtual aliens, effectively estranged from the very people we are there to serve.
Giving fresh attention to urban ministries will result in a season of fruitfulness for Salvation Army mission. Following Jesus’ example, our incarnational presence and the grace of the gospel will do its renewing work in the lives of individuals, families, and whole communities. Envision the day when the Army in all of our major cities will be strongholds for 21st century urban mission and ministry. Pray and ask God if he is leading you to be in the vanguard of this initiative.
