Be Ready for When Bad Weather Becomes a Disaster

The summer storm season is here. Below are five tips to help you prepare — and protect yourself, your family, and your property.

Emergency Supply Kit

Hold a family meeting. Ensure that everyone in your household knows what to do during a severe storm. Discuss where you will take shelter, where you will meet after the storm, and — if an evacuation becomes necessary — where you will go, and how you will get there.

Assemble an emergency kit. You should have enough drinking water for three days (one gallon, per person, per day) and food requiring little or no water to prepare. Your kit should also include clean clothing, personal hygiene items, a first-aid kit, and basic tools and supplies.

Keep a battery-operated or wind-up radio handy. Even if the power goes out, you will be able to receive important information on weather conditions.

Check your trees. Ensure that trees near your home are healthy and stable. Prune dead or weak branches that could blow off and cause damage during a storm.

Check your insurance. Make sure you have sufficient coverage in case your home sustains damage during a severe storm.
