Saturday, December 8th It's "Fill The Truck" day at our local Walmart on B Drive North in Battle Creek.
Help us collect toys and coats for children in Calhoun County. Volunteers will be on hand from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm to hand out a wish list and collect donations. We hope to collect enough gifts for 100 children. Walmart and The Salvation Army together we're making Christmas bright.

Starting Monday, October 1st The Salvation Army Will Begin Accepting Applications for Holiday Food Baskets

Students from Endeavor Academy's Kiwanis Club hold an annual food drive on behalf of The Salvation Army.
The Salvation Army Holiday Outreach Office will be open starting Monday, October 1st and accepting applications for assistance. The Outreach Office is located at 400 Capital Avenue NE (main level by the beauty shop). Applicants may apply Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Please be aware the office will be closed on Thursday's. Anyone needing to apply after 5:00 pm, may call to make an appointment.
Those applying for assistance must bring photo identification, social security cards for each person in the household, proof of income & expenses and a reasonable wish list ($50.00 and under) for each person in the household. Families qualifying for assistance will receive a holiday food basket for Thanksgiving and Christmas, toys for children (at Christmas) and warm winter clothing as needed. For additional information you may call the Outreach Office at 269-963-3640 ext. 18 and speak with Mary Gothard, Holiday Outreach Coordinator.
The Salvation Army has been providing Holiday food baskets and children's toys to the Battle Creek area continuously since 1905. The Outreach Center goes to great lengths to insure that our efforts are not duplicated using our computerized interview process, the sharing of information with the State of Michigan HMIS system and clearing all of our clients through 211. Partners in meeting the need include the U.S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots program, the Battle Creek Fire Department and all of our Angel Tree locations.

GRANT FROM POST FOODS

The Salvation Army would like to thank Post Foods and their grant committee members for awarding Sally's Kitchen a grant in the amount of $4,000.00. The Salvation Army serves over 45,000 meals every year through our Monday through Saturday feeding program. This grant will allow families, seniors and individuals to benefit from having access to fresh vegetables and fruits through Sally's Kitchen.
"For over 117 years Post Foods and The Salvation Army have been serving the needs of Battle Creek, MI and around the world. Today The Salvation Army serves in over 120 countries meeting the physical, social and spiritual needs of hurting humanity," Major Thomas E. Riggs, Commanding Officer of The Salvation Army.

FORGET THE BOX...THINK OUTSIDE!
It's that time of year again-TSAO-The Salvation Army Outdoors summer educational day camp program will begin on Monday, June 11th and spots are still available.
This program is designed to provide youth with engaging and educational outdoor experiences. The Salvation Army of Battle Creek will be holding 9 week long TSA Outdoor sessions staring the week of June 11th. Each week will focus on our environment and our relationship to it. Children will be engaging with nature through daily outdoor activities and educational lessons.
The program is for children ages 5 to 12. The cost is $35.00 a week per child and includes lunch, two snacks and field trips. The hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm.

Corporate And Civic Leaders Join The Salvation Army's National Advisory Board
Nine New Members Bring Business, Marketing and Media Skills and Experiences to Support Charity's Mission
ALEXANDRIA, VA (February 16, 2012) -- The Salvation Army's National Commander William A. Roberts announced the installation of nine new members to The Salvation Army's National Advisory Board (NAB), a group of national civic, philanthropic and business leaders who assist the organization in matters ranging from strategic planning to public outreach. Each new member has been selected for their community involvement and engagement with The Salvation Army in their local communities and with other nonprofit and relief organizations across the United States and internationally.
"We are honored that each of these civic and community leaders have accepted the mantel of national voluntary leadership with The Salvation Army," said Commissioner Roberts. "Each is accomplished in business and community change and we are honored that they will apply their knowledgeable insight to help guide The Salvation Army."
As of January 1, 2012, each member began serving a three-year term on the NAB. They join an august group led by the National Board Chair, Charlotte Jones Anderson, Executive Vice President Brand Management / President of Charities for the Dallas Cowboys.
"We are thrilled to be growing the size and scope of The Salvation Army's National Advisory Board," said National Board Chair, Mrs. Charlotte Jones Anderson. "The Board has now grown to 44 members and the combined wealth of experience, talent and dedication of these new leaders will bring a wonderful set of fresh ideas to our goal of helping others."
New members include Mrs. Pamela Abdalla; Mr. Gary Brown; Mr. Bill Burke; Mr. Michael Ducker; Mr. Michael Flaherty; Mr. Eric Holm; Ms. Marcia Larson; Mr. Joel Manby and Ambassador Gaddi H. Vasquez.
Additional information on each of the new NAB members includes:
Mrs. Pamela Abdalla is currently chairman of The Salvation Army's Middle East Advisory Board and has helped launch the first Salvation Army outpost in the United Arab Emirates. She moved to the UAE in 2008 when her husband's work as a partner in the Reed Smith law firm took them to that region. Prior to her move, Mrs. Abdalla worked as an attorney and most recently served 12 years as a hearing officer in Allegheny County's family court system. She has also served as a member of The Salvation Army's Greater Pittsburgh Regional Advisory Board since 2004, and was the recipient of the Catherine Booth Award in 2006. Mrs. Abdalla also volunteers with The Salvation Army's Family Crisis Center, launching the annual fundraiser, the Garbage Bag Gala.
Mr. Gary Brown is the Chief Executive Officer of Mount West Investments, a private equity and real estate investment organization. Previously, Mr. Brown was the President of Iron City Sash and Door Co. from 1991-2005. Mr. Brown serves as a member of the Greater Pittsburgh Advisory Board of The Salvation Army, and served as Vice Chairmen from 2006-2010. Mr. Brown is currently the Chairman of the Program Committee, which includes Emergency Disaster Services, Family Caring Center and Social Services. Mr. Brown was also the 2008 recipient of the William Booth Award and volunteered his services at Ground Zero following the 9-11 terrorist attacks. Mr. Brown's father, Mr. J. Duncan Brown, was a charter member of the first National Advisory Board Council Conference in 1976, which became the National Advisory Board. He was Chairman of the NAB from 1986-1991. Mr. Gary Brown also serves on the Board of Trustees for Westminster College in New Wilmington, PA.
Mr. William (Bill) Burke is Senior Vice President of Nationwide Financial (NF) Marketing in Ohio. Mr. Burke is responsible for all of NF Marketing including Individual Investments, Individual Protection and Solutions, Retirement Plans, Investment Management - Advertising, Campaigns Management and Channel Marketing. Mr. Burke has extensive experience in marketing and business strategy, product development and innovation, advertising and communication, and relationship management.
Mr. Michael L. Ducker currently serves as Chief Operating Officer for FedEx Express and President of its International divisions. In this role, Mr. Ducker leads the customer-facing aspects of the company's Express operations and sets the strategic direction for the company's global pickup and delivery functions for both parcels and freight spanning more than 220 countries and territories across North America, Latin America & Caribbean, Asia Pacific, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and India. He also oversees the company's freight forwarding functions and once of the largest-volume customs clearance operations in North America. Based at the FedEx Express global headquarters in Memphis, Tennessee, Mr. Ducker has lead the company's unprecedented international expansion over the past decade. In addition, he serves as Chairman of the U.S. Coalition of Service Industries and the International Policy Committee of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
Mr. Michael Flaherty is the President of Walden Media, a company he co-founded in his apartment in 1999. Since that time, Walden has gone on to produce over 30 films including The Chronicles of Narnia, Charlotte's Web, Holes, Bridge to Teribithea, and Amazing Grace. Its publishing division has published a number of award-winning books, including the Newberry Award winner Savvy. As a writer, Mr. Flaherty has been published in a number of newspapers and magazines including the Wall Street Journal. A graduate of Tufts University, Mr. Flaherty lives in Lexington, Massachusetts where he helps his wife Kelly home school their three children.
Mr. Eric Holm is the owner of Metro Corral Partners, a 28-unit Golden Corral franchisee with operations in Florida and Georgia. As president, he actively manages the daily operation of Metro Corral, which is the largest Golden Corral franchisee in the country. Mr. Holm has been in the restaurant industry for over 30 years and has substantial experience in restaurant operations, marketing and development. In addition to his involvement with The Salvation Army in Orlando, Fla., Mr. Holm and his wife, Diane founded Helpings from the Heart Thanksgiving Feast in 1992. In 2011, on Thanksgiving Day, more than 24,000 free meals were served throughout Central Florida.
Ms. Marcia Larson is Manager of HR Content & Communities at Dow Jones / Wall Street Journal, a subsidiary of News Corporation in New York City. Ms. Larson's current work for Dow Jones and News Corp. incorporates recruitment, blogging, tweeting and other uses of social media marketing as well as training others at News Corp. on how to leverage social media. In addition, Ms. Larson participates in international relief work annually, most recently in Tanzania with the Micah Global Foundation, an international outreach service organization.
Mr. Joel Manby is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Herschend Family Entertainment (HFE), the largest family owned theme park corporation in the U.S., that owns and operates 26 properties across ten states, including Stone Mountain Park, Dollywood and Silver Dollar City. Mr. Manby and his company were featured on the hit CBS show Undercover Boss and received worldwide acclaim for portraying a compassionate business culture. Prior to joining HFE, Mr. Manby was a part of the start-up team for Saturn Corporation and was instrumental in launching Saturn's innovative marking and distribution strategy. After his successful tenure at Saturn, Mr. Manby was promoted to CEO of Saab Automobile
Ambassador Gaddi H. Vasquez is currently the Senior Vice President of Public Affairs for the Southern California Edison Company, one of the nation's largest investor owned utilities. Prior to this position, Ambassador Vasquez served as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Organizations in Rome, Italy. AMB Vasquez also served as Director of the United States Peace Corps and became the third longest serving Director in the Peace Corps' 50-year history. During this tenure, the Peace Corps established the Peace Corps Global AIDS Program, which has resulted in the development of new country programs with a focus on the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief.

One Step Closer
On Sunday, January 15th the Corps Council approved the drawing for our new Chapel addition. It will be fitting for us to break ground in 2012 as this is our 125th Anniversary in Battle Creek.

WOW-Wild On Wednesday's starts again on 1-11-2012 after our short Christmas break. WOW begins at 5:15 pm with a meal then children ages 5 to 18 are separated into groups: Sunbeams for girls in 1st through 5th grade, Adventure Corps for boys in 1st through 5th grade, Girl Guards for young women in 6th through 12th grade and Rangers for young men in 6th through 8th grade. This is a FREE program and open to any child in the Battle Creek area. Transportation is also available, please call 269-963-3640 ext. 12.

Target Gives Back Through Its Annual School Shopping Spree

12,000 Kids Nationwide Receive an $80 Target GiftCard to Purchase Needed School Supplies
On Tuesday, July 26, 2011, local students in need had the opportunity to visit a Battle Creek Target store and purchase backpacks, calculators, pens and pencils, art supplies, binders, clothing and other must-have supplies just in time for back-to-school. The Salvation Army and Target are helping a total of 12,000 K-12 students across the country gear up for the upcoming academic year and get ready to succeed in school with the Target School Spree. Each child, selected by The Salvation Army, were awarded an $80 Target GiftCard to purchase much-needed back-to-school supplies. Each child will be given a reusable Target shopping bag and be paired with a shopping chaperone for their fun day of back-to-school shopping.
At The Salvation Army's Annual Community Picnic held on Sunday, July 24th, parents were able to sign their children up for a chance to win one of 20 shopping sprees. Major Belinda Riggs and Marcie Gothard of The Salvation Army randomly drew the names of our shopping spree winners.
Education is at the heart of Target's giving and the Target School Spree is one way that Target acts locally to help kids learn and schools teach, paving a path to graduation. As part of the Target School Spree, Target awarded all 40 of The Salvation Army Divisions nationwide a total of $1 million in Target GiftCards and in-kind contributions for the shopping sprees. Nearly 500 Target stores will participate in the one-day Target School Spree event in select regions across the country. Each $80 Target GiftCard awarded as part of the program will provide a child with the necessary supplies to go back to school in the fall, ready to learn.
The Salvation Army is so thankful for the partnership they have with Target in helping local students get ready for another successful school year. Thank you to our volunteers- Taylor McCoy, Palace Armstrong, Natalie Rial and Nicole Rial for helping students shop. Thank You for another Wonderful Community Picnic and Car Show
We would like to thank Ron Antes & the Drifters Car Club members, Red Cross Clowns, Jason Hopkins & the Red Wagon for partnering with The Salvation Army for our Annual Community Picnic on July 24th. The kids throughly enjoyed a chance to vote for their favorite car, have their face painted, receive a balloon animal and have a chance to get in the red wagon & have their picture taken. We are so appreciatative of the support we receive each year in putting on this picnic for our community.

TSA OUTDOORS-AN EXCITING SUMMER EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM FOR CHILDREN IN OUR COMMUNITY
TSA OUTDOOR is a program designed to provide youth with engaging and educational outdoor experiences. The Salvation Army of Battle Creek will be holding 9 week long TSA Outdoor sessions staring the week of June 13th. Each week will focus on our environment and our relationship to it. Children will be engaging with nature through daily outdoor activities and educational lessons from Growing Up Wild and Project WILD.
Children will receive lessons that include sections on Wild Wonderful Words, Healthy Me, Helping Hands, Mighty Math, Art Projects, Music & Movement and science through Ready, Set , Go. Children will also receive lessons in Character Building education. The cost per week is $35.00 and includes lunch, two snacks and any field trips. Parents or guardians will be required to register their child for each weekly session.

ABOUT
Growing Up Wild is an early childhood education program that builds on children's sense of wonder about nature and invites them to explore wildlife and the world around them. Through a wild range of activities and experiences Growing Up Wild provides a foundation for developing positive impressions of nature and life long social and academic skills. (Council of Environmental Education, Growing Up Wild, pg. 2)
Project Learning Tree is a Kindergarten through 12th grade environmental and conservation education program emphasizing awareness, appreciation and understanding of wildlife and natural resources.
Children attending TSA Outdoor will also have the opportunity to enjoy a camping experience at The Salvation Army's camp called Little Pine Island in Grand Rapids, MI. The purpose of Salvation Army Camping is to serve the needs of campers: physical, social, and spiritual. For physical needs, our aim is to help campers develop good health habits in cleanliness, proper rest, balanced diet, exercise, and care of the body. To meet social needs the camp provides an opportunity for each camper to contribute to and receive from a group living experience. The aim is to help campers make their own right decisions, stimulate creativity and foster independence.

Thank You for another Wonderful Community Picnic and Car Show
We would like to thank Ron Antes & the Drifters Car Club members, Red Cross Clowns, Jason Hopkins & the Red Wagon for partnering with The Salvation Army for our Annual Community Picnic on July 24th. The kids throughly enjoyed a chance to vote for their favorite car, have their face painted, receive a balloon animal and have a chance to get in the red wagon & have their picture taken. We are so appreciatative of the support we receive each year in putting on this picnic for our community.
