The first Kroc Community Garden of Grand Rapids was established in May of 2008.
The Salvation Army in cooperation with New Branches Community School
planted 4 large planting boxes.
This was a wonderful opportunity for the school children
to put into practice their ecology skills.
Teachers and Parents were involved all summer in watering and weeding the garden.
The community helped with the establishment of the garden by providing the materials to build the raised planting beds, fencing and sprinkler system.
A local landscaping company provided
the labor and equipment to build the planting beds.
Neighbors also were able to reserve planting plots in the garden for a nominal fee.
An intern from the Community College managed the garden for the summer.
It truly was a community effort.
