Going Live, on Hebrews 4:12

by Blake Fewell

BlakeLooking back at the topics and stories I've covered on my Moody Bible Institute radio program, Hebrews 4:12, it's amazing how many memorable moments there have been in just a year and a half.  Topics have ranged from the theology of the sacraments to understanding God's will.  In Christian news, I've covered everything from Harold Camping's end-of-the-world predictions to a Facebook church.

People often ask how I decide on the weekly topics and what goes into preparing for two hours of air time.  As a rule, it has to do with what's on my heart that week.  Hebrews 4:12 airs on Fridays from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.; starting on the Tuesday or Wednesday beforehand I begin thinking about pressing issues.

Topics on my heart and mind encourage me to dig deeper. For example, one week, after finishing a book about a "no tolerance mentality" when it comes to matters of sin and worldliness, I talked about it on the program. More recently, I had a listener ask me if the holiness movement was alive or dead, so in response I ran a two-part series exploring the theology and current status of the holiness movement.

Once I've chosen my topic, I begin studying it whenever I can.

Friday after class, I begin writing my script, time sheet and song list for the show.  This usually takes around two or three hours. Once complete, I head over to the studio, set up my laptop, pull up the music and start the show.

One show I really enjoyed was discussing the theology of the Church. I explained the differences between the universal Church and the local church and why theological orthodoxy was essential in it. I also shared about the purpose and mission of the Church by using General Gowans' philosophy of "save souls, grow saints and serve suffering humanity" as a holistic approach to church mission.  One of my favorite parts of this discussion was sharing the cultural differences between the first century and twenty-first century churches.

Every time I sit in front of the microphone, cue the music and slowly raise the faders, I'm ready to share with my listeners. I'm reminded my listeners trust me, not just as a friendly voice but as a reliable source of information. With that in mind, I prepare fully to ensure what I say is accurate, biblical and theologically sound. But more than anything, my prayer is for the Lord to use me, and what I've learned that week, to make a difference in someone's life.
