Thanksgiving day, 1951, I found myself, together with hundreds of other American soldiers, on a pier at the Seattle harbor. We were preparing to board a troop transport ship destined to Korea. It was a dark and rainy day and gloominess was the dominating mood. At the adjacent pier another transport was unloading soldiers returning home from the war and there were hundreds of people cheering and celebrating their safe return. We couldn't help but feel a little bit envious but at the same time we realized that they had done their duty and now it was our turn. There were no crowds of people seeing us off except some members of the Salvation Army. In the rain they were there to see us off, hand out small bibles and best of all serve hot coffee and donuts on this dreary day. With a smile and a Good Luck they sent us off to an uncertain future. Like me I am sure that everyone on that pier on this day will always remember this incident and hopefully, like me, try to give something back to support this noble organization. Thank you!
