Despite the winter nor’easter storm that moved through the east coast, The Salvation Army has continued to provide relief services for thousands of Hurricane Sandy survivors and will continue to do so indefinitely.
· The Salvation Army continues to provide food, hydration, emotional support and other supplies to residents of the most heavily impacted areas including New York and New Jersey.
· In New York City, The Salvation Army, the lead agency for the City’s Food Access Plan, is providing meals, hydration and emotional support to thousands. The effort of the Food Access Plan brings together resources from several members of the Volunteer Organizations Active in Disasters (VOAD) including the American Red Cross, as well as the City Council, the NYPD, the National Guard and dozens of volunteers.
· In New Jersey, The Salvation Army continued to provide critical services despite the nor’easter from mobile feeding kitchens (canteens).
· In coordination with volunteer and other partner organizations, The Salvation Army has helped provide more than 1.7 million meals and drinks to impacted residents.
· Overall, The Salvation Army has provided food and water, as well other items including:
· Baby formula
· Diapers and baby wipes
· Batteries and flashlights
· Toothbrushes and toothpasteGloves and hand warmers
· Shampoo and Conditioner
· The Salvation Army is leading efforts at 12 locations in New York City to provide needed food, water and other supplies to Sandy survivors.
· The Salvation Army is providing critical services in 12 counties in New Jersey.
In New Jersey:
· The Salvation Army is providing life sustaining services to hundreds of first responders and survivors at 16 shelters.
· The Salvation Army has 11 operational mobile feeding canteens located in New Jersey, and has been serving meals in 12 counties.
· These services are being provided through the efforts of 300 Salvation Army volunteers, officers, and staff, and made possible by the generous support of the people of New Jersey.
In New York City:
· As the lead agency for the City’s Food Access Plan, The Salvation Army is working with a broad coalition of partners from across the city to coordinate the distribution of badly needed water and food supplies to 12 sites in Staten Island, Queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan.
· The effort brings together resources from several members of the Volunteer Organizations Active in Disasters (VOAD) including the American Red Cross, as well as the City Council, the NYPD, the National Guard and dozens of volunteers from across New York City.
· With the assistance of 400 National Guard troops, service sites were established in public parks and playgrounds in the hardest hit areas. More than 160,000 liters of water and nearly 860,000 meals have been distributed to approximately 200,000 local residents. In addition, meals are being delivered to the apartments and homes of shut-in residents in these areas.
· The Salvation Army has provided feeding to all Special Needs Shelters and senior homes, providing more than 24,000 meals to people in need.
· On Long Island, The Salvation Army is serving meals at the eight local fire houses in the evening.

· Our Lady of Grace – 100-85 159th Ave. (BTW 100th and 101st Streets)
· St. Francis De Sales – 129-16 Rockaway Beach Blvd.
· Walbaum Parking Lot – 112th and Rockaway Beach Blvd (Drop Off)
· Calvary Baptist Church – Hicks St., Mill St. and W. 9th St.
· Brighton Beach – Brighton Beach and Coney Island Ave
· Our Lady of Solace Church – Mermaid Avenue and 19th St.
· The Salvation Army maintains a fleet of disaster vehicles and supply warehouses across the United States to enable speedy mobilization.
· There are more than 300 emergency response vehicles in the eastern and southern United States alone and nearly 600 units nationwide.
· These units are able to serve thousands of meals and drinks per day when operating at full capacity.
· In addition to food, hydration, and emotional and spiritual care, The Salvation Army is also prepared to provide:
· Clean-up kits containing brooms, mops, buckets and cleaning supplies
· Hygiene kits
· Shower units
· First-aid supplies
· Communications support
· EXTRA, the nationally syndicated entertainment show, with A.J. Calloway and Special correspondent Hilaria Baldwin helped distribute a tractor trailer full of water batteries, coats children’s books, socks, diapers, snack bars and more to people receiving help from The Salvation Army in New York. Supplies were provided by EXTRA, who partnered with corporate friends to help meet the need.
· New York Jets have noted $500,000 to relief efforts, to be split between The Salvation Army, the Mayor's Fund for NYC Hurricane Relief, and the Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund.
· BP Foundation donated 13 18-wheeler trucks containing $800,000 worth of supplies, including 150 generators, nonperishable food, water, flashlights, hygiene and sanitation products, first aid kits, gas cans and other useful materials to The Salvation Army in New York and New Jersey.
· FedEx Corp. has donated $100,000 in cash and $100,000 in-kind transportation services to support The Salvation Army’s relief efforts in response to Sandy, as part of a $1.2 million commitment to several humanitarian organizations providing disaster relief.
· Target also committed a $50,000 cash donation to The Salvation Army to benefit the survivors of Hurricane Sandy.
· The PNC Foundation will donate $150,000 to The Salvation Army to support relief efforts. The foundation also will match PNC employee contributions to The Salvation Army and other organizations up to a total of $150,000.
· Albertsons Markets LLC, from now through November 15, will run an in-store fundraiser to support The Salvation Army's Hurricane Sandy disaster response and recovery efforts.
· The National Football League (NFL) and the National Basketball Association (NBA), along with their players’ unions, will each donate $1 million to humanitarian organizations responding to Hurricane Sandy, including The Salvation Army.
· The Oakland A’s (MLB) Community Fund will be accepting monetary donations to help support those affected by Hurricane Sandy, with proceeds going to The Salvation Army as well as the Humane Society of the United States.
· Eli Lilly announced it will match, dollar for dollar, every donation a Lilly employee makes to The Salvation Army or the American Red Cross toward Hurricane Sandy relief.
Monetary donations are the most critical need as supplies and personnel move into the areas of greatest need.
· The Salvation Army is extremely gratified for the continued support of the donating public.
· To date, the Army has received more than $4.5 million in online donations alone to support relief efforts, and more than $540,000 through 1-800-SAL-ARMY. To date, The Salvation Army’s mail appeal has raised more than $5,500.

· Due to the high expense and time demands associated with delivering your gently-used household goods and clothing (gifts-in-kind), The Salvation Army cannot guarantee that any individual gifts-in-kind donated now will be sent to the disaster area. In times of disaster, our stores fill these needs from existing, pre-sorted stock. Your donations make a real difference.
· A $10 donation feeds a disaster survivor for one day.
· A $30 donation provides one food box, containing staple foods for a family of four, or one household cleanup kit, containing brooms, mops, buckets and other cleaning supplies.
· A $100 donation can serve snacks and drinks for 125 survivors and emergency personnel at the scene of a disaster.
· A $250 donation can provide one hot meal to 100 people or keep a hydration station operational for 24 hours.
· A $500 donation keeps a Salvation Army canteen (mobile feeding unit) fully operational for one day.
The Salvation Army is one of the nation’s largest providers of disaster service and responds to hundreds of disasters across the country each year.
· Hurricane Katrina (August 2005): The Salvation Army provided more than 5.6 million meals to survivors and first responders of Hurricane Katrina, and 2.5 million people were assisted with emergency food, casework, emotional and spiritual care.
· Haitian Earthquake (January 2010): The Salvation Army packaged and delivered more than 10 million meals to Haiti, and more than 27,000 survivors were treated at Salvation Army medical facilities. Additionally, The Salvation Army distributed approximately 8,000 hygiene kits.
· U.S. Tornado Outbreak (April & May 2011): The Salvation Army served nearly one million meals and distributed 50,000 hygiene kits, and more than 10,000 people received emotional and spiritual care.
