At this time many children were abandoned in Kinshasa streets and quite a number of young boys and girls were orphaned. Touched by this situation, Corporal Rüegger called SOS to his Swiss compatriots and started taking care of these children.

The Salvation Army: The Forgotten War

Everyday it seems the
world is hit with breaking
news of a natural disaster,
botched elections, crimes
against humanity and
death tolls from war. The
more news of devastation
that rolls in, the more desensitized
the public becomes.
Hope is lost and
we don’t know how we
can individually help or
impact the world. Statistics
such as, “5.4 million
people have died in the
Democratic Republic of
Congo since 1998 due to
civil war,” become so abstract
that we can’t wrap
our minds around them.
The fact is soon overlooked
and the incredible
desolation that the number
represents is forgotten.
How do we become a
part of the fight for justice
for all of God’s children
when the statistics seem to
be against us?

The Salvation Army: El Broquel Girls’ Home in Santiago, Chile

As we walked into El Broquel Girls' Home in Santiago, Chile in the South America West Territory, the halls of the home echoed with the sound of laughter from the girls, ranging in age from 4 to 18 years old, who lived

The Salvation Army in a different context, develop relationships

she was on a study abroad program. One such example is the Eluru Girls’ Hostel, a residential home for young girls. The hostels in India are set up to house children, starting at age 6, whose families do not live near a school. There is often a waiting list of girls who are hoping to obtain a spot in the hostel, but because of finances and space the Eluru Girls’ Hostel can only accommodate up to sixty girls at a time.

The Salvation Army: Spotlight on the Swansons

Commissioners Barry and Sue Swanson are well known throughout the Central Territory. Having served as corps officers in 6 corps, in 3 Divisional Headquarters appointments, and a total of 5 Territorial Headquarters appointments, the Swansons have invested in the lives of many soldiers and officers. In 2006, the Swansons received news that they would be moving to the United States National Headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia to serve as the National Chief Secretary and National Secretary of Women’s Ministries.

The Salvation Army: Project 24/29

In November youth from the Metro Division participated in Project 24/29 held at the Oakbrook Terrace Corps.
