Roofs for Papua New Guinea

In Papua New Guinea, The Salvation Army is growing rapidly with new officers building new corps every year.  When these officers start a new corps they build the church and their quarters themselves out of bush materials like sticks and grasses.  One of the challenges these officers face is the elements.  Papua New Guinea is a tropical island near Australia which gets anywhere from 70 to 120 inches of precipitation per year.  The officers' thatched-roof homes require a lot of maintenance and will often leak, which compromises their time for ministry as well as their family's safety.

During the territorial Central Bible and Leadership Institute (CBLI) 2012, campers raised funds to purchase new metal roofs for the officers of Papua New Guinea.  Metal roofs are able to sustain the heavy rain fall in Papua New Guinea, and require less maintenance than the thatched-roofs.
Throughout the 10 day camp, all age groups gathered together during free-time to make small metal pins and metal key rings to represent the new metal roofs to be purchased in Papua New Guinea.  Each night, these handmade pins and key rings were available for purchase at the united meeting.

The CBLI campers raised over $8,000 to build new metal roofs for The Salvation Army in Papua New Guinea, and an additional $5,000 contribution from Territorial Headquarters was added to the project.  Thanks to the funds raised by the Central Territory, 22 roofs were able to be purchased for Salvation Army officers and their families!  This means that our friends in Papua New Guinea will have more time for ministry and safer homes for their families.
