RECORD NUMBER OF PEOPLE HELPED BY
THE SALVATION ARMY'S
EMERGENCY COLD WEATHER SHELTER
A record number of individuals have now been assisted by the ECWS
Springfield, MO (February 21, 2013) - A record number of individuals have now turned to The Salvation Army's Emergency Cold Weather Shelter this winter for relief from the extreme weather conditions.
Overnight Wednesday, 40 individuals stayed at the Emergency Cold Weather Shelter, located at 1707 W. Chestnut Expressway, which brings the total number of individuals served this winter to 200 and an all-time record. The ECWS will remain open througout the day and overnight Thursday.
"Every single day it's The Salvation Army's mission to care & provide for those who turn to us for shelter because they have none, but that is especially the case during extreme weather conditions such as what we are experiencing now," Major Norman Grainger, Ozark Area Coordinator said.
ECWS clients are provided with a cot to sleep on during the night, a hot breakfast in the morning, access to shower facilities and assistance with general social services.
The Salvation Army also remains on standby to provide emergency shelter for up to 200 people should a wide-spread disaster impact the community at large. During the 2007 ice storm, The Salvation Army sheltered and fed hundreds of local residents at its main location - 1707 W. Chestnut Expressway - for more than a week.
Additionally, the organization's Community Center is also providing all-day child care today for students enrolled in The Salvation Army's After-School program and whose school has been cancelled. The Salvation Army provides this service to the community anytime Springfield Public Schools are cancelled due to inclement weather.
