Frequently Asked Questions about Volunteer Bellringing

Who can sign up to be a volunteer bellringer?

Hundreds and hundreds of volunteers will be needed to ring the bells at dozens of red kettle locations in Greene, Christian, Taney & Stone counties! For a list of 2012 Red Kettle locations please click here.

Bellringing is a great volunteer opportunity not only for individuals, but also for families, organizations, groups & businesses! This is also a great volunteer opportunity for families with younger children.

Groups, organizations and businesses that sign-up volunteers to bellring for at least six consecutive hours will be provided with a volunteer sign that displays the name of their group/organization/business on their kettle stand. To help meet this time requirement, we encourage you to invite friends & family members to volunteer bellring alongside you, your staff members or employees!

How do I sign-up - either myself, a group, or my business?
A volunteer or group of volunteers select a day, time, and location & then call either (417) 862-5509 ext.144 to sign-up at red kettle locations in Greene & Christian counties or call our Branson Corps at (417) 339-4434 to sign-up at red kettle locations in Taney & Stone counties - it's that simple!

How long is a volunteer bellringing shift?
You or your group are, of course, welcome to bellring for as long as you like and to sign-up for as many days that you would like. However, we ask all volunteer bellringers to sign-up for at least one two-hour shift. This allows The Salvation Army to more effectively manage & oversee the dozens of red kettle locations & hundreds of volunteers during the Tree of Lights season.

What is the minimum age required to volunteer bellring?
Everyone of any age is welcome to ring at the red kettles!  However, we ask that children under the age of 14 have adult supervision at all times. Likewise, at least one adult must be present at all times for every three children under the age of 12 at a red kettle site. Please note that all kettle sites are outdoors & volunteers are not allowed to bellring inside at any of the locations.

How many people can bellring together at a red kettle site?
Almost all kettle sites have limited space and are stationed outside the main entrance to a business. Therefore, a maximum of two to three volunteer bellringers per kettle site at any given time is ideal.

Does volunteer bellringing fulfill community service hours?
Absolutely! Whether you need to complete volunteer community service hours for school, your civic organization, or your philanthropic organization, volunteer bellringing is a simple & easy way to do so!
