& SCHOOL SUPPLIES NEEDED!
Volunteers & school supplies are needed to help local children
Springfield, MO (June 19, 2013) Although summer has just begun, The Salvation Army is already gearing up for its 2013 Back-to-School Assistance Program.
Each year, The Salvation Army helps local children start the school year right by providing them with basic school supplies, backpacks, shoes and clothing from its thrift stores.
"We hope that the assistance we provide helps level the playing field for these children," Major Claire Grainger, Springfield Corps Officer said. "While we can't supply everything for them, we try to help these children with at least the basic items they'll need for the first day of school and for many of them these very basic items are all that they'll have."
But helping so many requires the help of many others.
The Salvation Army is currently in need of school supplies and new or gently-used children's clothing. Suggested school supply donations include backpacks, crayons, primary writing tablets, and small pencil boxes. School supply donations may be dropped off anytime at The Salvation Army's main location - 1707 W. Chestnut Expressway.
Children's clothing of all types & sizes for children in Kindergarten through 12th grades in needed now through Saturday August 3rd. Suggested children's clothing donation items include jeans, button-down shirts, sweaters, pants, t-shirts, skirts, blouses, etc. - boys & young men's clothing is especially needed! Please take all clothing items to The Salvation Army's Family Thrift Store located at 1737 S. Campbell Ave. or call (417) 866-9426 for a donation pick-up.
"Our hope is to not only ease the financial burden placed on many low-income & struggling families during this time of year, but to also give the children the confidence they need in order to learn and succeed," Grainger said.
In addition to school supplies and clothing, numerous volunteers are needed from Saturday August 3rd through Monday August 5th to help pack backpacks, sort school supplies and act as personal ‘shopping buddies' for the children & families receiving assistance. To sign-up to volunteer or for more information please call (417) 862-5509 ext. 116.
