HUNDREDS OF VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO HELP

‘STAMP OUT HUNGER'!

Community support & volunteers needed to help hungry Ozarks residents!

Springfield MO (February 27, 2014) Hundreds of volunteers are needed to help ‘Stamp Out Hunger' on Saturday May 10th during the National Association of Letter Carriers' ‘Stamp Out Hunger" Food Drive. Volunteers are needed throughout the day to help sort and pack away donated food at The Salvation Army's main location - 1707 W. Chestnut Expressway.

"This is a great volunteer opportunity not only for individuals, but also for families, student groups, civic organizations and businesses," Audrey Esther, Community Relations Director, said.

Volunteers are needed during the following shifts: 2 pm - 5 pm (Shift #1) 5 pm - 7 pm (Shift #2) & from 7 pm - 9 pm (Shift #3). To sign-up for a volunteer shift please call (417) 862-5509 ext.116 or email audrey_esther@usc.salvationarm y.org. Children between the ages of 5 to 14 years old are welcome to participate, but must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

The annual NALC ‘Stamp Out Hunger' Food Drive is the largest single-day food drive in the country. Locally, the donated food will help restock food pantries located at The Salvation Army, Grand Oaks Mission and Victory Mission.

In addition to more volunteers, food drive coordinators are also hoping to receive more food donations this year. Last year, donations were down more than 9,000 pounds from the previous year's total of 121,772.

To donate during this event, residents simply need to place a bag of nonperishable food items near their mailbox on May 10th for their local letter carrier to pick up during his or her regular mail route. The letter carrier will then ensure that the food goes directly to a local food pantry to be distributed to individuals and families in need. Suggested nonperishable food donations include breakfast cereals, boxed dinners, pasta & pasta sauces, canned soups, canned meats, peanut butter, dried beans, baby food, and canned fruits & vegetables.

For more information about volunteering during the NALC ‘Stamp Out Hunger' Food Drive on Saturday May 11th please contact The Salvation Army at (417) 862-5509 ext. 116 or email audrey_esther@usc.salvationarm y.org
