THE SALVATION ARMY CONTINUES TO RESPOND TO THE COLD WEATHER
The Salvation Army continues to respond to those seeking shelter to escape the cold. When a National Cold Weather Advisory is in effect with a wind chill below 14 degrees, The Salvation Army opens its facilities at night to those seeking shelter. "People are also welcome to stop by our building at 1707 W. Chestnut Expressway and get out of the cold and have a cup of hot coffee anytime during our regular office hours between 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.," said Major Norman Grainger
In 2008, The Salvation Army provided cots, a shower kit and a hot breakfast to 127 persons beginning December 22 through March 7. We have already provided assistance to 45 people over an 11 day period during this winter season. The facilities will be open this evening.
The Salvation Army offers year round long-term intervention programs for helping those who wish to break the cycle of homelessness. The Harbor House provides an opportunity for men struggling with addiction to re-establish themselves in the community. Classes, counseling and work experience along with accountability and a safe environment give men a new start in life. The Family Enrichment Center provides a nurturing and safe place for families who are homeless. The New Start Housing program is a transitional housing program for those currently living in a shelter situation.
