KIWANIS CLUB FOOD DRIVE
COLLECTS 'CANS FOR KIDS'
Donations will help feed children and others who rely on The Salvation Army's feeding programs
Springfield MO (March 26, 2013) Members with Springfield's Downtown Kiwanis Club will collect nonperishable food items for those in need during the ‘Cans for Kids' food drive on Saturday March 30th.
The food will be distributed by The Salvation Army to local children, families and others who use the organization's food pantries & feeding programs. The annual food drive also comes at a critical time during the year when donations are typically low, but demand is high.
Last year, The Salvation Army served more than 100,000 meals to those who were hungry or could not feed themselves and assisted more than 5,500 local households through its Emergency Food Pantry.
On Saturday March 30th from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Kiwanis and Key Club members will collect nonperishable food items outside Dillon's located at 2842 E. Sunshine. Organizers hope that during this event residents may think of those in the community who struggle with food insecurity and make a donation.
"On this day while customers are shopping for items to prepare their Easter dinner they are encouraged to grab a few extra items and donate them for those in our community who are less fortunate," Ramona George, Kiwanis Club's ‘Cans for Kids' committee chairperson said
Nonperishable food items that are most needed include breakfast cereal, canned meats, pasta & pasta sauces, peanut butter, baby food, canned vegetables, rice, fruit juice and boxed dinners.
